Description

Breast Cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis in the US and is the second leading cause of cancer-related death after lung cancer. Treatment strategies include, either alone or in combination, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy as well as newer, innovative approaches. Surgery, however, is often the first-line treatment modality. This presentation will focus on the complications associated with surgery and adjunctive therapies that can include post-surgical pain, wound infection, hematoma, lymphedema, and the seroma.  Several strategies will be discussed on how the caregiver and patient can help to mitigate these complications.

 

 

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity the learner should be able to:

  1. Describe at least two types of Breast Cancer treatment modalities.

  2. Discuss at least 3 post-op complications. 

  3. Identify the importance of surgical compression bra to mitigate post-op complications.

 

Faculty Bio:

Dr. Gendreau is the Clinical Education Specialist (Skin Care Solutions) at Medline Industries, Inc. Over past many years, she has been extensively involved in developing clinical education in various media including eLearning, webinars and videos to name a few. In addition to her skill in creating effective educational programs, Dr. Gendreau has been a skin and wound care specialist for over a decade. She has lectured both nationally and internationally on skin and wound care topics
